You’ve likely seen those ads in your favorite men’s magazine or on TV: the advertisements for human pheromone cologne. These pheromone cologne ads promise to help you score with any woman you desire. The ads make it seem as if all you have to do is dab a little of the pheromone cologne on your skin and all of the sudden women will be falling all over themselves just to be close to you. Does this cologne really work that well? Is it like magic? As many who have purchased products like these can tell you, they don’t work nearly as well as the manufactures claim.

What Are Pheromones?
Have you ever been to the park and saw a dog in heat attracting a male dog? How do the dogs know that the other one is sexually active and why is the male dog going crazy just being around the female dog? The answer is pheromones. Pheromones are chemicals in the bodies of mammals and other creatures that attract mates. They are essentially sex hormones. When the male dog smells the female pheromones, his senses go crazy, his body reacts and the dog experiences a serious drive to go after that female. So we know that pheromones work well for animals and other creatures, but does it work that well for humans?

Have you ever been to a party or a club or a bar and you were talking to someone you were extremely attracted to? What were you attracted to? Was it the appearance of that person? Was it that person’s bank account, or their car, or their social status? Scientists who study attraction will likely say that it’s all of the above, but it’s hardly ever the same for every person. You may find one woman extremely attractive while your friends may not. So pheromones really don’t even come into play when it comes to human attraction; at least not yet. Human pheromones come into play when you get close to that person, when you kiss that person and when you have sexual relations with that person. That’s when pheromone cologne may help you build on attraction that’s already there. But pheromone cologne likely won’t help you build attraction that you haven’t already built through attraction or interaction.

Is It Good?
Sexual hormones and other chemicals that help us attract a mate work off of compatibility. A woman who is attracted to the way a man smells is probably genetically compatible with that man. That means they will have healthy kids. After all, sex and attraction are really about reproduction when you get to the biology of it all. Therefore, if you use pheromone cologne to ‘trick’ someone into becoming attracted to you, you are essentially fooling biology, which may not be good in the long run, especially if you decide to reproduce.
